<body><div id="PageDiv"><table border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 width=544><tr valign=top><td height=13 colspan=2></td><td height=13></td></tr><tr valign=top><td height=687></td><td height=687><p class="style5">W.E.P.A.</p><p class="style3">Cortina Indian Rancheria The Cortina Indian Rancheria was established on June 26, 1907 by order of the Secretary of the United States, Setting aside 160 acres for the exclusive use of this Band of Wintun Indians. Subsequently, Cortina acquired an additional 480 acres by order of the Secretary , on July 20th, 1907 to the Cortina Band of Wintun Indians, a federally recognized Tribe with a land base of 640 acres, located in North Central California. </p><p class="style3">The Rancheria is situated in the territory formerly occupied by the ethnographic Patwin, the most southern of the three linguistic divisions of the Wintun People. Settlement of this area by "Outsiders" began along the Sacramento River as early as 1846, and by 1900, only a few villages were thought to have remained.</p><p class="style3">The Tribe strives to find economic self- sufficiency. It is in this endeavor that the Tribe has seen fit to include environmental protection into it's overall economic plans.</p><p class="style3">In November of 1994, Cortina Rancheria established the Wintun Environmental Protection Agency (WEPA).</p><p class="style3">The Tribe formally adopted WEPA by resolution No. 10-18-01, Tribal Environmental Laws and Regulations, and the Environmental Policy Act of 2001. This tribal agency is governed by a Board of Commissioners, appointed by and answering to the Business Committee. The Board has monthly meetings which are open to the general council members and the public (unless in executive session or caucus).</p><p class="style3">The Tribe plans to implement and regulate all aspects of environmental protection, where it is appropriate. The determination will be made cooperatively by WEPA, the Board and Business Committee.
